Looking for a project to keep your children busy on a rainy day? Have a bottle you absolutely love, but cannot find a use for? Searching for an inexpensive craft project to complete for gift giving? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this bud vase made out of a bottle project would be suitable for your needs. Below is a list of materials, project ideas and some basic instructions:
Materials you may need:
- WD-40 or Goo-gone
- Ribbon
- Your favorite glass bottle
- Assorted colors of glass paint or stain
- Several fine tipped brushes
- Sponge paint brush – the kind used for stenciling work well (optional)
- Waterproof glue or decoupage
- Glitter or glitter paint pens (optional)
- Your favorite decorations (examples: buttons, wooden cut outs, yarn, decorative papers, fabric swatches, magazine cut outs, etc.)
- Scrap paper to work out designs or to create a stencil template
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Paper towels for clean up
- Newspaper to cover work surface
- Shallow containers for water to clean brushes and store paints
Project ideas and suggestions:
- If you have chosen a bottle because you like the shape, you may wish to consider sponge painting the outside surface or decoupage decorative elements to the glass and finishing it off with ribbon.
- If you have chosen a bottle because you find the shape and the color appealing, consider using paint to cover any of aspects of the bottle you wish to hide (such as a painted on label or trademark) and garnishing the entire surface with glitter.
- If you have chosen a bottle for its size and nothing else, consider painting the entire surface with glass stain, add designs using glitter paint pens and garnishing with ribbon around the neck.
Basic project instructions (variant depending on how you wish to design your bottle):
Step 1: Clean the entire surface inside and out of the bottle, allow to dry completely. Use WD-40 or Goo-Gone to remove glue residue left over from the bottle’s label (if there is one).
Step 2: Decide how you would like to design the bottle using your scrap piece of paper for trial and error or to create a stencil template (keep in mind the curves of the bottle).
Step 3: Set out your materials necessary to achieve the look you are striving for on top of your newspaper covered work surface.
Step 4: Begin working on your project once your are confident with the design you have worked out. Remember to take your time if you are working on a detailed project or materials you have not worked with in the past.
Step 5: Once everything has dried completely, you are ready to add your favorite flower arrangement or simply wrap it up as a gift. (NOTE: If you choose to glue fabric to the outside of your bottle, it is a good idea to save it for imitation flower arrangements. The water used for living flower arrangements is likely to dissolve the glue.)
